The demon snarled at her. “Dumb little witch. Trying to command my kind?” She left the shed without looking back; she couldn’t.
In the morning they were healthy; as before their father, his woodcutter axe…
A week later the hunters came from the village.
She knew it was the demon’s doing. She'd expected no less.
Her children would avenge her.

It wasn’t a bullet to the spine. It wasn’t the Joker. It wasn’t a grapple hook malfunctioning; it wasn’t a horrible fall. It wasn’t an undodgeable explosion, it wasn’t kidnapping, it wasn’t a beating.

In fact it wasn’t Robin at all.

It was Tim Drake on his home from school, on the school bus, talking and laughing with a friend. A normal friend without any superpowers. It was a young man speeding; it was a car going out of control.

 It was an ordinary, horrible traffic accident on a hot summer day.
